Efficient Drying

The Gravi-Dryer drying system is characterized by its high energy efficiency (figure: Labotek)

Material drying is an important process in any form of plastics processing. Labotek A/S, Frederikssund, Denmark, has set itself the task of making this process as efficient as possible, and of minimizing energy consumption through the use of new technologies.

A complete system for material drying will therefore be on show, consisting of desiccant dryer, drying hopper and control system. With its gravimetric throughput measurement, the Gravi-Dryer can precisely measure the intake and discharge of plastic pellets, and thus automatically adapt the drying time to the material throughput, ramp up the material volume slowly or quickly at the start of production and also ramp it down again at the end of production. Overdrying due to excessive dwell times and material residues at the end of production are thus now a thing of the past. In addition, the air volume for each stainless steel drying hopper can be adapted individually to the product throughput. Each hopper is equipped with individual temperature control, separate heater and adaptive air volume control. The drying hoppers are thereby fed from a central DFD desiccant dryer. This allows the air to be dehumidified by a twin-bed desiccant assembly with molecular sieve absorption material. Thanks to a moisture-dependent regeneration system, the molecular sieves are regenerated, depending on the degree of saturation, so that the energy required is reduced accordingly. Depending on the drying requirements, the drying systems can achieve a dew point of -40 °C or even better.

All material drying and handling functions are managed by a central Labo-Net control system. A user-friendly interface with 10" touchscreen monitor for wall or panel mounting allows all the functions to be easily controlled and the system status clearly displayed.
