Kunststoff Helmbrechts AG, Helmbrechts, Germany, sees its area of expertise in the field of sophisticated surface technology. The company will be presenting its GalvanoLum process for partial electroplating. Until now, a partial metal layer would be produced using a 2K component or interrupting the electroplating process and removing part of the layer with a laser. The novel GalvanoLum process boasts a special technology in which, prior to electroplating, the areas where the required symbols are later to appear are treated first. This process is capable of producing line widths similar to those of a barcode. In the electroplating bath, the metal cannot adhere at these points, and so the raw material is left exposed. As in conventional day/night design, the symbols can be backlit with colored LEDs (Fig.). Depending on the intended application, various industrial processes, such as color printing, are used to create colored symbols on the back sides of parts.

Components subject to greater stress can be made by combining GalvanoLum with in-mold labeling. This is achieved by back-molding an ABS film, which enables the push-button-like connections between metal layer and plastic, to another plastic to produce better mechanical properties in the part.
