3-D Hybrid of Electronic and Plastic
Kunststoff Helmbrechts AG, Helmbrechts, Germany, integrates electronics into an only 8 mm high, three-dimensionally formed plastic molding. The demonstrator part SmartWave shows what hybrid parts produced using the in-mold labeling process (IML) are capable of (Fig.). A decorative film is merged with a functional film to form a sandwich. The functional film is produced by the project partner, Mid-Tronic, Wiesau, Germany, and is fitted with resistors and other electronic components using the conductive gluing method. In addition, conductors are applied by screen printing. The IML process permits a completely closed surface with black panel effect on the demonstrator part. Several programs and functions can be controlled by touching capacitive buttons and sliders. The hybrid design thus creates completely 3-D-capable control panels and reduces the number of individual parts and tools during the production process.
