Live Compounding of a Color Masterbatch
KraussMaffei Berstorff, Econ
Econ GmbH, Weisskirchen, Traun/Austria, and KraussMaffei Berstorff GmbH, Hanover, Germany, will compound a LLDPE color masterbatch as microgranulate with a diameter of 0.4 to 0.5 mm live during K 2016 in order to demonstrate the advantages and efficiency of mutually matched components. A ZE 42 BluePower twin-screw extruder from KraussMaffei Berstorff, a Melt-X1 melt pump from Eprotec with downstream ESD70 screen changer and an underwater pelletizer EUP 150 from Econ with an EWT 250 process water system from Econ with centrifugal dryer are used. The throughput rate for this application is approx. 70 kg/h.
The ZE 42 BluePower twin-screw extruder is optimized for throughput rates of 250 to 500 kg/h and is mainly aimed at compounders with small batches, specialties or rapid formulation exchange. The ZE BluePower offers a wide spectrum of configurations with the modular system of cylinder units of length 4 D and 6 D and a wide range of screw elements. The interplay of a Do/Di of 1.65 and a torque density of up to 16 Nm/cm³ increases the throughput while simultaneously increasing the energy efficiency.
The EUP 150 underwater pelletizer used is designed for throughputs from 100 to 450 kg/h for normal pellets. In the presented model, it is designed for pelletizing micropellets with fine screens and specially designed vanes in the dryer. The thermally insulated pelletizing head is provided with multihole nozzles, which are adjusted for the production of micropellets.
