Sustainable Packaging Solutions for the Circular Economy

The demand for sustainable packaging products is increasing due to plastics’ poor image. In view of this, Illig Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, Heilbronn, Germany, is enhancing both mold and machine technology. The further development of IML-T (in-mold labeling – thermoforming) permits the manufacture of easily recyclable plastic-cardboard laminate packaging products. This method produces a packaging that can be decorated on both sides. The plastic inlay can be easily separated from the cardboard encasing. The development is oriented to the requirements of design for recycling and aspects of eco-design. The application runs on IML-T systems from Illig, and thus extends the possibilities for decoration of thermoformed products.
The aspect of design for recycling also covers the manufacture of cups with labels that can be easily removed. In addition, a process for the decoration of lids is being developed, which, together with the established IML-T, i. e. the labeling of cups and bowls, opens up an economic, material-efficient way for the complete thermoformed packaging, comprising cup and lid, which can be decorated according to customers’ wishes.
Thermoforming Line with New Drive System
At the trade show, Illig is additionally presenting the fourth generation thermoforming line with higher performance, a new drive system and a significantly higher clamping force. Further developed Industry 4.0 functions are integrated into the machine, with the focus on a new mold system. With the presented machine and application developments, the manufacture of packaging should be more sustainable and also more flexible.
