Protection against excessive generation of heat through solar radiation is afforded by the additive Acrysmart from HPF The Mineral Engineers Quarzwerke GmbH, Frechen, Germany, which changes its transmittance of light and solar radiation as a function of the ambient temperature of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). This automatic shutdown feature means that solar energy, for example, can be harnessed in a regulated manner, allowing savings to be made on heating and cooling energy. Use in electrical components is contingent on efficient dissipation of accumulated heat, without compromising the level of electrical insulation. This combination of properties is provided by Silatherm, a further additive that can be used in both thermoplastics and thermosets. Apart from thermal conductivity, Silatherm improves the strength of the polymer. The same strength, albeit for elastomers in this case, is boosted by the mineral filler Kaolin Chinafill, which is reputedly superior to precipitated silicas while offering similar property changes and is often employed in white household goods. Wollastonite flours can be used to ensure permanent use of fluoro elastomers in all kinds of media while simultaneously improving mechanical properties. The flours are surface-modified for easier incorporation and are available under the trade name Tremin.
