Holographic Storage: Tapestry 300r
In the search for archiving systems with extremely high storage capacity and permanence, the Tapestry 300r holographic storage product could provide a solution. Under a joint development agreement, Bayer MaterialScience, Leverkusen, Germany, and the US company InPhase Technologies Inc. have developed materials in which holographic information can be permanently stored. Data storage disks with a capacity of 300 gigabytes are currently being developed to production readiness and will soon be launched on the market. The new development offers write once, read many (WORM) performance.
Other advantages over conventional magnetic tapes, hard disks or HD-DVDs are handiness – they occupy the same amount of space as CDs or DVDs – and durability. According to the manufacturers, the disks should last many decades.
