Highly transparent liquid silicone rubber

Highly transparent liquid silicone rubber

Working together with Kostal GmbH & Co. KG, Lüdenscheid, Germany, Momentive Performance Materials GmbH, Leverkusen, Germany, has developed a new, highly transparent liquid silicone rubber (LSR) to couple a front view camera to the windshield. Acting as a silicone cushion, the material provides a blister-free transition between the optical sensors and the glass windshield, adapts perfectly to different surfaces, thereby reducing scattered light and improving reproduction accuracy. The company will launch this completely new liquid silicone rubber as LSR 7005. The low hardness of the material (only 5 on the Sore A scale) allows a form-fitting, tolerance-compensating connection of the sensors to the windshield, regardless of the windshield’s radius of curvature. In addition, the new LSR does not adhere permanently to the glass, even at high temperatures and after longer periods of time. This means that the complete module can be used again when the windshield is replaced. The excellent transmission values of 95% over a wide range of wavelengths and temperatures, together with an index of refraction comparable to that of glass, ensure maximum light transmission and a clear, detailed visualization of the surroundings. The material can be processed fully automatically on injection molding machines, enabling production of sophisticated geometries and complex multi-components parts.
