High-Performance PE for Packaging Films
Borealis and Borouge Launch New Brand Anteo
Borealis and Borouge have officially introduced a family of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) in a concerted action worldwide. The global launch of Anteo is taking place simultaneously at three different geographic locations. At the company’s Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria, the Borstar Bimodal Terpolymer (BBT) Technology used to create the new product was launched. Anteo is produced with this technology at the production facility at Borouge in the United Arab Emirates. From there, customers from both companies are supplied worldwide. In Shanghai, China, the focus is on the development opportunities made available to provide Anteo product in such a huge market with an increasing base of current and potential customers.
Bimodal Terpolymer Technology as the Key
The Borstar Bimodal Terpolymer Technology from Borealis offers high flexibility in polymer design by combining smart catalyst design with a two-reactor system process with two comonomers. This creates high degrees of freedom and thus a tremendous flexibility in the production of polymer chains, as Maurits van Tol, Senior Vice President of Innovation & Technology of Borealis Polyolefine GmbH in Linz, emphasized. As a result, polyethylene types are obtained which do not follow a uniform distribution by average polymer lengths in molecular weight and density, but have distinct proportions of lower and higher polymer lengths and almost no very short chains.
Anteo is expected to bring significant benefits in the production of packaging films. According to the company's statements, during the extrusion of the material, a significantly lower pressure and thus energy expenditure is necessary. The particularly wide processing window of the material provides advantages in sealing and welding. In addition, the optical properties of Anteo contribute to attractive shelf optics in the retail chains.
Improved is also the puncture resistance: an important contribution to prevent the packaged content from being corrupted and damaged. "Borstar technology and catalyst design are cornerstones of success and the key to creating added value through innovation," said Alfred Stern, Borealis CEO for Polyolefins and Innovation & Technology.
Application Tests Show Advantages in Properties
Even before the official launch today, Borealis and Borouge had carried out processing and application tests with more than 100 customers around the world. According to company data, the processing pressure could be reduced by more than 15% when compared with conventional metallocene-LLDPE sealing materials and the energy consumption was reduced correspondingly. Furthermore, when used as a sealing material for laminated and non-laminated films, manufacturers achieved highest packaging speeds, which resulted in lower energy consumption and less material waste.
Anteo FK1820 and Anteo FK1828 are now available in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Africa and Asia as the first types of the Anteo product family.
