High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

Ever Lighter Caps

A new HDPE product lends itself to the production of lightweight caps and closures for beverage bottles (figure: Borealis)

With a view to meeting its sustainability responsibilities, the beverages industry is calling for lightweight closure systems. It is also keen to minimize costs in bottle production because they are a key factor affecting its competitiveness. BorPure MB5568, a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from Borealis AG, Vienna, Austria, is a lightweight material for caps and closures for carbonated soft drinks, juices, teas and bottled water.

The company’s proprietary Borstar technology supports the tailoring of mechanical and processing properties to specific applications because it uses less material but does not compromise on performance. BorPure MB 5568 also offers the benefits of improved stiffness and environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) – facilitating the production of even thinner caps and closures, and thus saving on material and production costs.

End customers’ primary concern is that the product tastes exactly as it did when bottled. Like all BorPure grades, BorPure MB5568 offers excellent organoleptic properties and does not affect the taste or smell of the bottle contents. This parameter is continuously monitored to ensure consistent batch-to-batch quality.
