Halogen-free Flame Retardant
New halogen-free flame retardant compounds from Lati Industria Termoplastici S.p.A. of Vedano Olona, Italy, comply with toughened requirements in the electro- and electronics industries that result from new official regulations, such as the WEEE guideline and the RoHS directive. These compounds also comply with the stringent specifications regarding Glow Wire Ignition Temperature (GWIT) and Glow Wire Flammability Index (GWFI) found in the newly formulated European standard IEC/EN 60335-1 for household and similar electrical appliances. They also fulfill class V-0 fire protection requirements according to UL94.
Lati’s new HF-1 product line does without halogens, red phosphorous and antimony as flame retardants. All of them feature trouble-free processing and thus are well suited for thin-walled parts:
Latamid 6 H2 G/30-V0HF1 (polyamide 6 with 30 wt.-% glass fiber) and Latamid 66 H2 G/25-V0HF1 (PA66 with 25 wt.-% glass fiber) have a GWIT rating of 800°C as well as GWFI ratings of 960°C and 850°C respectively for 1 mm thick samples and exhibit very good mechanical properties. Typical applications include housings for high-tension switches, contactors, etc.
Laramid G/35-V0HF1 is a 35 wt.-% glass fiber-reinforced polyphthalamide (PPA). Compared to PA6 und PA66, it has higher shape stability and is thus suitable for modern lead-free SMT soldering methods where temperatures occur as high as 260°C. Its comparative tracking index (CTI) is 600 V.
Later 4-V0HF1 (polybutylen terephthalate, unreinforced) and Later 4 G/30-V0HF1 (PBT with 30 wt.-% glass fiber) are suitable wherever PA cannot be used due to its high moisture absorbance. It has a GWIT of 775°C and a GWFI of 960°C (at 2 mm sample thickness for both). It mechanical properties, such as modulus of elasticity and tensile strength are comparable to those of PA6 and PA66 grades.
Also new in their portfolio is Latamid 66 H2 G/25-V0KB4, a halogen-free 25 wt.-% glass fiber-reinforced PA66 flame-retarded with the aid of red phosphorous. It has a GWIT of 775°C and a GWFI of 960°C and thus complies with requirements according to IEC/EN 60335-1 as well as for fire protection class V-0 according to UL94 at 0.75 mm. It is suitable for use in power switches, fuse distributor panels, housings etc.
