The Five Pillars of Plastic Recycling
Herbold Meckesheim GmbH, Meckesheim, Germany, is a manufacturer of machinery and systems for treating plastic waste. The company has analyzed the process chain for processing waste into five pillars (size reduction, shredding, fine grinding, washing/separating/drying and agglomeration/compacting), and offers methods for all processes. For example, the HGM series granulators have been devised for the size reduction of difficult, especially tough material or material containing foreign bodies, for which normal granulators have too short a knife lifetime, and conventional shredders cannot produce the required end product. Subsequently, further shredding can be carried out on an SB granulator with forced feeding. The feed material is not fed by into the grinding chamber by gravity as in the case of standard granulators, but by an even feeding by screw granulators. For fine grinding, a PU disc pulverizer can be used, which is suitable for grainy or brittle materials, such as PE pellets or rigid PVC regrind. Before reuse, the wastes are washed, separated and dried in the fourth column.
The new HV ST-150/150 vertical staged dryer consists of a multi-stage rotor, which dewaters the material by means of sieve basket, and is suitable for drying regrind or pelletizing thermoplastics. According to the manufacturer, the machine is especially suitable for drying brittle plastics with low material losses from fines. The staged dryer generates material with residual moisture contents in the range from 0.4 to 0.06 wt. %. For agglomeration and densification, Herbold offers the Plastkompaktor. The friction between the two disks of the compactor heats, dries and compacts the material simultaneously, which permits an energetically efficient process.
