Gravimetric Dosing System (GDS)
In the beginning, FDM GmbH, Königswinter, Germany, had developed their new Gravimetric Dosing System (GDS) with a round design as a special model for an individual customer. At the customer’s plant only very restricted space was available over the feeding areas of a multilaver line, due to the parallel arrangement of the extruders. As a space saving solution the engineers at FDM developed a round table over which the feeding for the subsidiary components is arranged in a semi-circular form around the feeding ducts for the main component. The initial special model serves now as a prototype for series production. Thanks to the new circular construction, the Gravimetric Dosing System (GDS) is very stable and can be adapted readily to all machine configurations. While the main component can be fed in at up to 800 kg/h, the largest system (GDS 11) permits continuous metering of 10 secondary components at rates ranging from 0.1 to 400 kg/h. The Siemens Simatic S7 serves as the control system. Depending on settings, it can store from 200 to 1,000 recipes and 200 to 500 material feed rates.
