Size Reduction of Large Waste
Herbold Meckesheim GmbH, Meckesheim, Germany, recently put a granulator system into operation at Otto Graf GmbH Kunststofferzeugnisse, Teningen, Germany, for use with a coextrusion blow molding machine. The plastics processor is now able to recycle the tops and tails of multi-layer rainwater containers, which are manufactured with volumes of up to 3,000 l, into the production process directly at the blow molding system while still warm. In addition to tops and tails weighing more than 20 kg, the granulator also handles purgings that can have many times this weight. This is absolutely necessary for this application, since the top and tails and purgings can have wall thicknesses of up to 100 mm. The final product is a regrind with very good flow characteristics, few fines and a high bulk density that can be reintroduced to the process in-line.
The granulator system supplied consists of a belt conveyor, the SMS 60/100 series granulator itself, a suction unit and sound insulation for a noise level below 80 dB. A characteristic feature of the system is the low power input needed for the size reduction of viscoplastic high-molecular-weight PE tops and tails. The low power input is due to the special rotor design. The rotor has been manufactured from a single forging, which ensures not only an enormous centrifugal mass but also great stability due to the fact that there are no weld seams. The rotor knives are secured in position by a back stop, thus preventing the rotor knives from shifting even under extremely high cutting forces. Not only the rotor knives are mounted at an inclined angle. The bed knives are also mounted at an opposite inclined angle. This double cross cutting arrangement assures a clean cut with a constant cutting gap over the whole length of the knife.
