mi2 Series of Melt Index Testers

Precise Preparation

With the mi2 melt index testers, the starting position is set precisely with sensor assistance (figure: Göttfert)

Göttfert Werkstoff-Prüfmaschinen GmbH, Buchen, Germany, a specialist in the rheology of polymeric materials, showcases its program. The latest development is the mi2 series of melt index testers (Fig.). With these instruments, the manufacturer has improved the sample preparation and the filling of the test barrel. Since these tasks are often performed by different persons, there may be deviations due to differences in handling.

The new sensor-controlled setting of the starting position for the measurement is intended to ensure that the operator does not have any influence on the measurement procedure at this point. The reproducibility of the measurement is significantly increased, since all measurements have the same initial conditions. The starting position from 45 to 100 mm before the die is manually adjusted using a scale on the back of the instrument. In view of the short 46 mm measurement test range with the start 46 mm before the die, the test conditions thus obtained are particularly important.

The mi2-series melt index testersare designed for data gathering according to ISO 1133 method B-C, ASTM D 1238 method B-C(D) and ASTM D 3364. Method D (optional, only available with type mi2.2) describes the FRR (flow rate ratio) test. The manual measurement method A can also be performed according to the standards.
