Foam Sealing System Fermaskin
The Foam under the Skin
Fermaskin is the name of the new foam sealing system from Sonderhoff Chemicals GmbH, Cologne, Germany. It consists of a two-component flexible polyurethane (PU) foam and a flexible, elastomer-like protective outer skin. Using the newly developed DM 404 four-component mixing and dispensing system, the sealing foam can be processed at low pressure and applied directly to the part.
The manufacturer emphasizes the excellent physical properties of this material system, e.g. a tensile strength of at least 800 kPa. The permeability to liquids is almost zero even at slight compression of the seal. For the first time, it is possible to combine such high tear strength and very good resilience with minimal moisture uptake. Since the foam core and skin of the seal can be varied individually, the property profile of FIPFG (Formed-In-Place Foam Gaskets) products can be expanded enormously. In the next step of development, Sonderhoff plans to create electrically conductive gaskets.
