Soft Touch with Perfect Protection
RKW Sweden, Frankenthal, Germany, introduces films based on filled polyolefin (FPO) that offer several advantages over alternative materials for all kinds of flexible packaging applications, particularly in the food industry: A paper-like feel, effective barriers, outstanding printability, cost saving and environmental benefits.
Food packaging has to protect the products from harmful outside influences and must meet strict safety requirements. At the same time, packaging technology must take into account issues such as energy and material costs. FPO offers excellent protective properties and allows for cost savings. It is made from the polymers polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), to which RKW adds natural minerals in various degrees of fineness. Thanks to the usage of more than 50% minerals, FPO provides excellent barrier properties to light, oxygen, and water vapor, leading to sustainable solutions with improved carbon footprint. With these characteristics, FPO films are suited as aluminum free wraps particularly for volatile dairy products such as butter, margarine and cottage cheese. Consuming less energy than aluminum, the material provides additional sustainability compared to other materials for butter wrapping. It also features improved tear resistance and dead fold.
FPO films’ unique composition offers a paper-like soft touch and a matt look. The improved stiffness yields excellent printing results for a strong shelf appeal and product differentiation. FPO has been approved for food contact by the US Food and Drug administration and the European commission. FPO can also be applied for pouches, bags and as FFS (form, fill and seal) films for increased product shelf life.
