External Flow Meters Reliably Monitor Parallel Media Circuits

Early Warning System for Production Problems

In parallel media circuits, there is the risk of changes in flow rates going unnoticed because the media flow is divided between several channels. To avoid these problems, HB-Therm AG, St. Gallen, Switzerland, offers a series of flow meters (type: Flow-5) in its program, which permanently monitor parallel media circuits and identify changes at an early stage before rejects are produced.

The flow meters are available in two variants. The "unit attachment" model can be directly connected to a Thermo-5 temperature control unit. The "autonomous" model can be positioned freely, for example on the platen of the injection molding machine. The flow meter is characterized by its high thermal resistance to water up to 180 °C and oil up to 200 °C, and its wide measurement range of between 0.4 and 40 l/min. The flow measurement without moving parts and a fully corrosion-resistant hydraulic circuit make the unit durable and robust.

Flow-5 allows the individual process powers of the circuits to be determined. The operator is assisted with functions such as the automatic limit value setting or data recording via USB for subsequent evaluation in Excel. With the "autonomous" model, the flow rate can be manually adjusted by means of a fine control valve. Fully automatic process monitoring of flow rate and temperature is performed with high precision for each circuit with an ultrasound and temperature sensor Pt 1000 respectively. In this way, the Flow-5 serves as "early warning systems" for emerging problems before they lead to poor part quality in production. The fast identification of flow problems can subsequently save the company laborious and expensive maintenance of the injection molds used.
