The automotive industry creates diverse and demanding applications for which standard materials on their own are not good enough. This is where advanced additives come in: selectively improving such properties of plastics as scratch resistance and flame retardancy. Tegomer AntiScratch 100 from Evonik Industries AG, Essen, Germany, is an additive that permanently protects scratch-prone plastic parts, such as door panels, without producing disturbing surface effects.
The service life of polyethylene water pipes operating continuously at 90 °C can be extended by crosslinking with silane. Dynasylan Silfin 50 has been designed specifically for use with drinking water. HDPE pipes crosslinked with it are much lighter, less prone to cracking and exhibit improved corrosion and wear resistance.
Easy-flowing, antistatic powders and pellets are easy to process. Sipernat Specialty Silica, Aerosil Fumed Silica and Aeroxide Fumed Metal Oxides are flow improvers and anti-caking agents that render sticky powder or pellets flowable, even after prolonged storage at elevated pressure and elevated temperature. For tackling problems with electrostatic charging of polymer powder during handling, one solution is to use Aeroxide Alu C.
Evonik supplies two crosslinkers under the Taicros brand for electron beam curing of polyamide. These additives apparently improve the material’s properties by boosting dimensional stability at high temperatures and boosting the aging resistance of polyamide, says the manufacturer. They also render crosslinked polyamides an affordable alternative to more expensive materials in many applications (e. g., contact holders, electrical connectors). Furthermore, the crosslinkers are said to make attractive building blocks for new composite materials for high-performance circuit boards.
The raw material manufacturer additionally offers triacetonamine (TAA) and its derivatives as additives for the production of hindered amine light stabilizers or HALS. These are used in low concentrations to protect polymers against degradation by light, oxygen and heat. Typical applications are in the automotive industry and greenhouse films.
