Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Rubber Tepex
Modern Materials for Sport Shoes
Footwear ranks among the most important sports accessories. Here, too, there is the right tool for every job. With the exception of indoor soccer shoes, all soccer shoes have exchangeable or molded studs of some kind underneath the soles to provide sufficient traction against slipping. The term studs now usually refers to the exchangeable kind, which are usually made of plastic or rubber and are inserted into the sole individually. In the case of studded shoes, the rubber or plastic cleats are shaped as an integral part of the sole and are not replaceable. The sole must have at least ten cleats. Shoes for artificial turf are fitted with numerous small studs, sometimes referred to as millipedes in the sector. Today a number of different specialized studs or cleats are available. They are made from specialty plastics and rubbers supplied by Lanxess in Cologne, Germany.
The soles of modern football shoes, too, consist of a combination of plastics and rubbers provided by this material manufacturer. Incorporated in the soles of modern soccer shoes are high-performance plastics such as Tepex which reinforces the sole, yet remains extremely lightweight. Ethylene-vinyl acetate rubber (EVM) provides the cushioning and stabilizing effect. A soft material tailored to the athlete’s running style is built into the heel to absorb shocks, while an elastic material is used on the ball of the foot so that as little kinetic energy as possible is lost.
