Length Check of Plastic Profiles

Checking and documenting part characteristics helps to reduce rejects and contributes more efficient production. In almost all plastics processing companies, checking and documenting 100 % of products is desirable to prevent in a systematic manner both failures and complaints. For extruded plastic profiles, manual random sampling to check lengths has been the common practice to date, but more demanding standards now need automated concepts. The noncontact SLM product length measuring system from Elovis GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany, meets this requirement while the material is being transported.

The system can measure cut to length profiles, pipe and formatted products with an accuracy of 0.01 % at speeds up to 4 m/s. The measuring range depends on the sensor length and is currently just under 5 m. Length, part speed, position at the time of measurement and other status information is available at a RS485 interface. A PLC control system developed in-house offers the ability to compare measured data against specified values and to select corresponding sorting units. The manufacturer can modify and expand this control system to meet customer needs.

In addition, Elovis offers a new sensor generation (type: μSpeed) based on laser Doppler technology. In the plastics industry, machine meters are frequently calibrated with noncontact speed and length measuring systems to prevent streaks and spots on the material surface that causes rejects during calibration. Regardless of the surface, μSpeed systems measure with an accuracy of 0.05 % and can be used in a portable manner, since parameterization is not required and they are maintenance-free as well as permanently calibrated. These systems are available for speeds up to 6000 m/min and detect lack of movement and direction.
