Packaging Solution with Multilayer Composite Barrier
A pioneering application in the field of multi-layer composite barriers was presented at interpack by Netstal-Maschinen AG, Näfels, Switzerland. The injection molding machine maker said that it is seeking to usher in the next generation of functional plastic packaging. By way of example, Netstal demonstrated the production of a container on an Elion 500 all-electric machine. The Elion offers high-precision control over processing, which ensures not only high molding quality, but also reduces scrap to a minimum.
In this recently developed application, a barrier film lies between two injected layers of plastic. The specific structure of the so-called multilayer barrier composite ensures that the barrier film is both protected from outside damage and unable to come in contact with the contents of the packaging. An additional and by no means inconsiderable advantage of the film is that it can be used to decorate packaging by means of in-mold labeling. The same process can be applied to the lid, too.
The molded part is made in a cycle time of less than 6 s in a 1+1 cavity mold by Glaroform AG, also in Näfels, Switzerland. The two Swiss companies developed this innovation in collaboration with Ilsemann Automation, Bremen, Germany. The three partners aim to replace existing barrier packaging with high-quality, resealable plastic composite solutions that can be produced economically and ecologically.
