Electrical/Electronics Friendly (EF)
New Electrical/Electronics Friendly (EF) grades of DuPont Zytel HTN polyphthalamide (PPA) are far less corrosive to delicate metal parts in direct contact with them than standard grades. The new resins are formulated to avoid ingredients that can cause corrosion of fine copper magnet wire or sensitive electrical contacts in parts serving in the hot, humid or wet environments encountered in automotive and industrial applications. Compared to the standard Zytel HTN grades, the EF resins retain their volume resistivity for a longer period of time when exposed to moisture. Tests also showed that the new EF grades have very high tracking resistance (CTI value = Comparative Tracking Index).
Potential automotive applications include encapsulated sensors for monitoring wheel speed, air or hydraulic pressure and transmission functions, and high-voltage cable connectors for electric and hybrid vehicles. The new EF grades are also suitable for electrical components required to maintain constant electrical properties for long periods of time in damp environments. Like other Zytel HTN PPA resins, the new EF grades are based on aromatic copolymers and retain their strength and stiffness at elevated temperatures. Their relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion enhances their very good overall performance in encapsulated parts such as sensors.
