Metal is Yesterday’s Material
Plastics have already been successfully replacing metals for years. Nevertheless, they still hold tremendous potential across different industries. Particularly for displacing metal die-cast parts of aluminum, magnesium and zinc, there is a steadily growing market with growth rates of up to 10 %. DSM Engineering Plastics, Geleen, Netherlands, with its ForTii product family, a polyphthalamide (PPA) based on polyamide 4T, is aiming to offer PPA materials that, as inexpensive alternatives, are intended to continue this growth into the future. For this purpose, a new PPA Eco family was already introduced early this year, and work is continuing on the introduction of the PPA MX grades, which, according to the manufacturer, offer cost advantages of up to 50 % compared to metal die casting. The PPA materials are available with different glass fiber contents (30 to 50 %) and, according to the manufacturer, offer greater strength and toughness over a wide temperature range as well as a high heat deflection temperature compared to the PPA grades currently on the market.
