Hot-Runner System for PC Applications
The INglass-HRSFlow Group, based in San Polo di Piave, Italy, has developed the Diamond Lux hot runner line specially for transparent polycarbonate applications such as automotive headlamps and glazing elements produced by injection-compression molding, which require a high-quality finish. The thermally optimized hot-runner system is particularly suitable for processing PC and HTPC (high-temperature-resistant polycarbonate). Spacers with low thermal conductivity insulate the plates from the mold. In addition, all contact surfaces with the mold are geometrically optimized to reduce heat dissipation.
According to the company, the heating elements are symmetrically arranged in the upper and lower parts of the manifold to reduce cold zones and long residence times. The screw-in nozzles, except for the tip, have no contact with the mold. Special brass tube heating provides more precise hot runner temperature control. A tight temperature tolerance of ±10°C is guaranteed across the system.
The hot-runner system is completely surrounded by a stainless steel tube that ensures uniform heat distribution by permitting only minimal heat dissipation. The tube also acts as protection for the thermocouples. The material and geometry of the nozzle tips and compression ring have been chosen to ensure an optimum temperature in the gate region and enable them to withstand high injection pressures. The whole system consists of specially coated steel that prevents polycarbonate degradation and so reduces the risk of the dreaded black specks occurring in crystal-clear applications such as lenses and glazing.
