Covestro AG, Leverkusen, Germany, is further developing its polyurethanes (PU) and polycarbonates (PC) for wearable electronic medical devices, among other applications. At K 2019, the breathable Platilon film made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) will be on show. According to the material manufacturer, these products are suitable for processors that use a roll-to-roll production process to make electronic patches efficiently.

The electronics are printed on the film and embedded in thermoformable polyurethane foam covered with a second film layer for wearing comfort. The patch is then fixed with a special skin-compatible adhesive that sticks firmly to the skin but allows painless removal of the patch. The adhesive system and the thermoformable foam are based on Baymedix PU materials.

Car Interior Concept

At the same time, Covestro is devoting itself to vehicle manufacture and will showcase a comprehensive car interior concept. According to the company, the important priorities here are functionality, comfort, and design, as well as efficiency. The focus is on esthetically pleasing surfaces that are pleasant to touch, the integration of ambient lighting, infotainment systems, and innovative seats. The glass-like PC surfaces of the Makrolon brand and its blends can integrate displays, sensors, cameras, and ambient lighting systems. Makrofol PC films, for example, are used for printed, even three-dimensional, large-scale covers for the integration of displays. The films also serve as carriers for printed electronics in touch screens.

In addition, Covestro supplies a range of Platilon films, which – in the form of hot melt films – can be used to bond different materials such as textiles. For textile coating in vehicle interiors, Insquin technology is used, which is based on solvent-free, waterborne polyurethane dispersions.
