Composite Pro laser systems

Projectors as an Aid to Aircraft Manufacture

Composite Pro laser systems

During the production of CFRP parts, the aircraft manufacturer Airbus S.A.S. uses the Composite Pro laser systems from LAP GmbH Laser Applikationen, Lüneburg, Germany, for measuring and projection. In the meantime slightly more than 200 LAP systems are in operation in the Airbus assembly works in France, Germany and Spain.

During the stacking of the carbon fiber parts, the laser beams project the exact position of the individual carbon fiber layers. This production method saves time and money, as the alignment and laborious measuring of the parts using templates is eliminated. In addition, the correct positioning and alignment of the carbon fiber mats can be checked during production using the laser projection. When a mat has been laid, a different colored laser line indicates whether the mat has been correctly positioned. Faults in the parts can thus be ruled out even during production.

According to the manufacturers, only the laser projects from LAP can project up to three colors simultaneously. Specific areas requiring particular attention can thus be highlighted. With the change in color from red to yellow or green the system can also signal which parts the worker still has to position, which parts are in process and which are already finished. Part numbers can also be projected.

The integrated LAP software can control and monitor all the work processes. According to Axel Rieckmann, Sales Manager Industry at LAP, results have shown that this technology offers an enormous simplification for such complex processes as the production of composites. In addition it is an extremely convenient and reliable quality assurance tool.

The special multi-head system for the processing of large parts is in use at Airbus. Several projectors whose working ranges overlap scan the whole length. There are therefore no limits to the size of the workstations, and hence to the size of the CFRP aircraft parts. "The outstanding feature with the Composite Pro laser systems at Airbus is that we have equipped some systems with a rotating projection. The part can thus be rotated in the assembly shop and the laser lines follow this rotation.
