Cavity Pressure Sensor for RTM Process

Production of composite parts places specific challenges on process monitoring and quality assurance. With a new sensor for resin transfer molding (RTM), Kistler Instrumente GmbH, Ostfildern, Germany, now offers the key to process optimization and monitoring in the processing of curing molding compounds for lightweight plastic construction in the automotive and aero industries.

The sensor (type: 6161AA) measures cavity pressures up to 200 bar. This makes it suitable for industrial use, predominantly for monitoring and controlling RTM processes, high-pressure RTM (HP-RTM) and sheet molding compound (SMC) processes, in which the pressures can reach 150 bar. Examples are the identification of filling defects or the control of cascaded filling operations via multiple gates. Besides pressure measurement, the sensor also allows the vacuum in the evacuated mold to be measured. It thus records the entire relevant process.
