Calcined Siliceous Earth
New functional fillers based on calcined siliceous earth will be exhibited by Hoffmann Mineral GmbH, Neuburg on the Danube, Germany, at K2013 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Thanks to a thermal post-treatment process, these products with the names Silfit Z 91, Aktifit VM, and Aktifit AM are color-neutral in the plastic. Because of this and other technical advantages, the calcined functional fillers are now being successfully used in many new applications, especially in thermoplastics such as polyamide, as anti-blocking additives in films, and as extenders for the partial replacement of pigments in masterbatches and compounds.
As a result of this special post-treatment, traditional filler products such as Sillitin, Sillikolloid, surface-treated Aktisil, and calcined surface-treated Aktifit AM are now also offering advantages in new elastomer applications. When used in ethylene-acrylic rubber (AEM), the Neuburg siliceous earth has a very beneficial effect on compression set and oil resistance. Very good results with the same level of flame retardancy are also achieved by adding Aktisil Q to silicone rubber as a partial replacement for the flame retardant aluminum hydroxide (ATH). Overall, the thermal post-treatment leads to cost savings in compound production.
