Targeted Measurements during Processing
Bürkert Fluid Control Systems GmbH & Co. KG, Ingelfingen, Germany, specializes in measurement and control of gases and liquids. Among their new products is the Flowave flowmeter, which is based on the SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) principle (Fig. 1). SAW sensors measure the propagation of structure-borne noise at the surface of the sensor tube, which is affected by the flow velocity of liquids.
A major benefit of the method is that no parts protrude into the tube. As a result, the measuring point does not differ from other parts of the tube with regard to flow conditions, cleanliness and nature of the surface. The measurement is accurate even at very low flow rates and responds immediately to changes in flow rate. Bürkert recommends the sensor especially for applications where considerably more expensive Coriolis devices have been used to date instead of magnetic-inductive sensors because of the low conductivity of the medium.
To measure conductivity, Bürkert has expanded the Element series of measuring devices to include the type 8228 (Fig. 2). The unit has one analog and two transistor outputs and can be operated with or without a display. The built-in temperature sensor permits temperature compensation, and since the sensor can provide the temperature values separately, a second measuring point is no longer needed. The conductivity sensor and temperature sensor are embedded completely in the sensor finger, which is optionally available in PP, PVDF or PEEK. This makes the sensor ideal for use in aggressive media and under harsh operating conditions.
The type 8697 pneumatic control/position feedback unit has been released for Element and Classic series process valves (Fig. 3). These devices are available as a control or feedback unit for Element valves (drive size 50), as a control unit for Classic valves (drive sizes 40/50/63) or as a feedback unit for the Classic series (sizes 40 to 225). The basic configuration of the type 8697 includes valve position feedback. The status of end position sensing is indicated by LEDs.
The Multicell Transmitter/Controller in a new housing design (Fig. 4) is a further addition to the product line. The Multicell (type 8619) can evaluate signals from a variety of sensors and finds use in the food processing and pharmaceutical sectors. Until now, only a panel-mount version was available. In the new, additional housing, the unit can be mounted at any location.
