Finke Presents Processes for Pigmenting Polyolefin from Recyclate
The variable batch-to-batch quality of the recyclate concerning color can be a problem for recycling since large amounts of pigments or colorants, usually titanium dioxide, must be introduced to compensate. This affects the physical properties and the processability of the plastics, which in turn limits their applications.
Karl Finke GmbH & Co. KG, Wuppertal, has developed a method for producing polyolefin bottles containing a high proportion of recyclate, in which a reliable color result can be obtained even with a small amount of pigment.
Co-extrusion allows recyclate and virgin material to be processed separately, and introduced into different layers. The outer layer always consists of virgin material.
The colorant can be used extremely economically since it does not need to mask the color of the recyclate. This allows a very small amount of pigment to be used based on the total amount of material. According to the manufacturer, the amount of pigment should not exceed the amount conventionally used for products made from virgin material.
Additional Design Scope
Since the outermost layer is not made of recyclate, there is additional design scope for decoration. On a dark background, a masterbatch with interference-effect pigment from the Fibaplast range can be used for the outer layer. A highly filled compound from the Fibafekt range allows very pastel tones to be formulated.
Even with high pigment loading in the compound, streak-free colors can be achieved. In the process developed by Finke, up to five layers can be co-extruded. This allows barrier layers to be incorporated preventing contact between the recyclate and contents.
