Universal Control for Gravimetric Blending
Bolder automation GmbH in Limburg, Germany, will showcase an alternative solution to plastics blend feeding. For this purpose they developed a PLC assembly unit to whom a blending unit including all valves, scales, blender and all remaining sensors is linked, and configured. Based on Simatic S7-1500 control technology, a batch metering unit with PLC units was mounted to the plant, which can be linked to any desired blending equipment. To provide for precise and fast weight measurement, Siwarex assembly units are employed, while communication is done via Profinet.
The blending units’ mechanical systems are independent of the respective control system, which is why different variants are obtained: they range from stand-alone operation of a blending unit with one PLC and one operator station, in its simplest version, up to integration of blend feeding into the existing machine control system. In this case, operation becomes part of machine visualization, with the hardware sitting locally on the blending unit. Starting from the first shot, the control unit learns the dosing rate for each single component, thus adapting to the time behavior of the valves and to the material’s flow behavior. This is how the system can make up for differences in weight very easily and precisely. Its diagnosis function is able to detect material shortage in components, and prior to processing on the machine, as well as difficulties in flow behavior.
