FIM Multi-Decor Concept

BÖ-LA Siebdrucktechnik GmbH, Radevormwald, Germany, specializes in film insert molding and industrial screen printing applications. Through its display screens, controls and dials, it offers a wide range of technically advanced, film-decorated plastic components for the automotive, household appliances and electronics business areas. BÖ-LA is proceeding along the path of functional integration in film insert molded (FIM) electronics and will be demonstrating the versatility of FIM in conjunction with new materials, surfaces and designs. It will present an mp3 alarm clock with a touch-sensitive surface to illustrate the FIM multi-decor concept (Fig. 1). 3-D-sensitive-touch technology makes it possible to create 3-D shaped surfaces, and so even supports seamless designs for complex part shapes. FIM electronics are used to combine decoration and touch function in just one film and embedded between film and injection molding compound. The FIM multi decor concept combines 3-D-sensitive touch with new design and decor options.

All kinds of surfaces are suitable, from matte via high-gloss to brushed textures. Another new development in FIM is a self-luminous, film-decorated navigation panel. This three-dimensional demonstrator part is the final part of the publicly funded joint project FIMO (Film Insert Molded-OLED). This utilizes the FIM process to pre-mold an OLED and simultaneously back-mold a decorative 3-D-molded hardcoat film. Just one working step is enough to produce such a plastic component in a seamless design with an integral surface and integrated OLED lighting (Fig. 2). The component significantly outperforms the prior-year demonstrator part in respect of brightness, size of illuminated area and durability. Through its various decoration processes and specially developed assembly processes, BÖ-LA is positioning itself as a provider for all kinds of decoration processes as well as for automated module assembly.
