Bioplastic in Thermoforming

The Amut Group has begun cooperating with NatureWorks to investigate the use of biopolymers in extrusion and thermoforming in processes for food-grade material. For the purpose, NatureWorks made its Ingeo PLA (polylactic acid) portfolio available.

The manufacturer of thermoforming machines Amut-Comi has now manufactured its Ingeo PLA on its plants with rollers produced by Coexpan. The company is part of Grupo Lantero, and specializes in the production of films and thermoformed packaging products. According to Amut, the products manufactured with Ingeo showed good properties at both low and high service temperatures.

Amut has demonstrated the use of an Ingeo PLA film in live operation at Chinaplas in Guangzhou. Further tests are planned with the combined Amut/Erema extrusion line, which allow the production of rPET films. Amut and Erema are jointly developing a direct extrusion process which will also allow PLA waste to be used.
Ingeo PLA is a thermoplastic material, which, according to the manufacturer, has high transparency, gloss and tensile strength compared with materials such as polystyrene (PS) or polypropylene (PP).
