Better Part Quality through Gentle Melt Guidance

It is not always easy to reconcile a constantly high part quality with short cycle times. While rapid solidification of the melt is desirable, all the cavities in the mold must be uniformly filled in order to satisfy the various quality requirements. The manifold system plays an important role here.

At K 2019, Günther Heisskanaltechnik GmbH, Frankenberg, Germany, presented its rheologically and thermally optimized manifold technology, which ensures that the molding compound can flow into each of the individual mold cavities with uniform pressure and uniform melt state.

Avoiding Differences in the Melt Viscosity

Imbalances are often caused by non-uniform flow behavior of the melt, which is the result of differences in the melt viscosity. The latter is influenced by the shear rate and temperature. To achieve uniform filling, the engineers at Günther design the manifold according to the flow requirements of the particular plastic types. For this purpose, the hot-runner manufacturer conducts material tests under production conditions.

In addition, Günther’s portfolio includes a wide range of standard manifolds, such as straight manifolds, H and T manifolds, as well as cross and star manifolds, which can be individually adapted to customer demands on the basis of a modular system of prepared semi-finished products. In addition, thermal simulations are used for the structural design.

Externally Heated Melt-Carrying Manifold Elements

All the melt-carrying manifold elements are externally heated; in addition, the high-quality surface in the channels ensures that the melt flow undergoes minimum pressure loss. The heater, which is pressed in a specially designed groove geometry at both sides is designed for efficient heat transfer to the manifold block. Depending on requirements, the manifold can be brazed or diffusion-bonded.

Because the two manifold halves are joined together, no undercuts and no edges are produced in the melt channels, which could lead to higher shearing and thus to a different flow behavior of the melt. Since the manufacturer introduces the channels into two manifold halves, more design options are available for balancing the channels.

Flow-Optimized Deflection Units

In addition, Günther includes deflection units in its program, which are flow-optimized and can be rapidly exchanged if worn or for cleaning. The same applies to plugs for sealing the manifold channels: inclined or contour plugs deflect the melt more gently due to their surface geometry. Contour plugs for needle valve applications and open systems are available.
