Welding Thick Insulating Panels
In the construction sector, pressure-resistant, water-repellent and durable insulating panels are used for the protection of houses against heat, cold and damp. BASF SE, Ludwigshafen, Germany, manufactures different grades of Styrodur panels (extruded polystyrene rigid foam), which contain air as cell gas and differ mainly in terms of their compression strength. The company has developed a non-contact thermal joining process for insulating panels. The welding technology is suitable for different insulating materials, which offers new combinations, principally for the construction industry. For example, Styodur can be combined with polyurethane, inorganic insulating materials or the melamine resin foam Basotect to form new insulating material solutions. Highly compression-resistant Styrodur panels up to 240 mm can be manufactured. In cooperation with partners, BASF plans to develop new applications in building insulation.
