Barex, which is marketed Europe-wide by Velox GmbH, Hamburg, Germany, and manufactured by Ineos Barex, Delaware, USA, is an ideal packaging solution for preservative-free natural cosmetics as well as airless containers. As a material it belongs to the family of acrylonitrile methylacrylate copolymers (AMAB) and is chemically inert which results in excellent chemical resistance. For this reason a very high barrier functionality in respect of gases, e.g. oxygen, as well as aromas, scents and other volatile components can be achieved. Interactions between the packaging and its contents either do not occur at all or are at a negligible level. Barex protects natural ingredients from oxidation and is thus suitable for very sensitive formulations such as those based on vegetable oils or grape extracts (polyphenols).
The use of AMAB grades in cosmetic packaging significantly improves the stability and shelf life of the products. It is also a suitable solution for airless dispensers (bag systems). In contrast to EVOH the barrier properties of Barex are not affected by moisture levels within the packaging. As well as meeting the current European directives for food contact Barex also meets the requirements of USP class VI for polymers as well as the EU Pharmacopoeia. It is therefore suitable for all classes of contents regardless of whether these are cosmetics or personal care products.
