Automated Process Monitoring During Injection Molding

For companies attempting to optimize their injection molding operation through monitoring and analysis and in this way lower their production costs in a sustained manner, Kistler Instrumente AG, Winterthur, Switzerland, offers the "ComoNeo" process monitoring system. Compared to its predecessor, both the hardware and integrated monitoring-software have been refined further. The display is optimized and has been upgraded to touch-based operation, tailoring it even better to user needs. The user also benefits from the fact that the number of channel inputs has been increased: Not all, up to twice as many (32) cavity pressure signals can be recorded. The number of digital outputs has also doubled, allowing more molded parts to be evaluated individually.

The software used in the ComoNeo is also committed to a process-oriented operating philosophy. This can be seen in the variety of new tools that actively assist the user both with analysis of process variations and monitoring of molded part quality. The system is just as well suited for plants that wish to systematically analyze and optimize their processes as for those focusing on transparency of the injection molding process and extensive documentation of molded part quality.

One special feature of the integrated monitoring software is the tool that prepares and positions the monitoring boxes for the good/bad evaluation. Previously, it was necessary for the user himself to set up the monitoring boxes. As a new function, ComoNeo incorporates a systematic procedure (evaluation/EO assistant) that guides the user quickly to defined rejection limits. With the aid of the EO assistant, the evaluation types as well as the associated limits can be specified. This makes precise molded part monitoring possible and so-called pseudo-scrap – that is, supposed rejects – is reduced. Since no defective parts leave production, customer complaints are avoided.

Second highlight is the so-called dashboard: This overview page summarizes all relevant process data as a way of displaying the ongoing process in a clearly understandable manner. The dashboard thus gives customers a way to detect process variations quickly. In addition, it is possible to navigate directly to the detailed data from the dashboard. An additional attractive new feature is the systematic orientation of the operating controls and procedures on the injection molding process. Among other capabilities, analyses can be performed on a cavity-specific basis.

Further practical tools include redesigned user management that allows company-specific setup of roles for different users, and automatic mold detection that prevents errors at the interface between the mold and integrated monitoring software. Thanks to automated mold selection, setup times are shortened as well.
