In the automotive sector, many different grades of plastic have their justification, due to the different requirements, e. g. in interiors and body applications, and in the engine compartment. For applications in the engine compartment coming into contact with coolant, Ascend Performance Materials LLC, Houston, TX/USA, has developed various new Vydyne grades of polyamide. 6.6 (PA66) with good hydrolysis resistance and high temperature resistance (Fig. 2). In the field of food packaging, according to the manufacturer, three layers of PA66, in combination with an ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier layer, achieve higher thermal resistance and higher puncture resistance than, e. g., with a five-layer film of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
