Alternating Temperature Technology (ATT)

System Solution for High Mold Quality

Alternating Temperature Technology (ATT)

Single Temperiertechnik GmbH, Hochdorf, Germany, and Sauer Product, Dieburg, Germany, are now marketing a variotherm mold temperature control system under the brand name Alternating Temperature Technology (ATT). ATT which was presented for the first time at K2007 is a complete system for the variotherm fluid temperature control of injection and compression molds using cooling channels arranged near the mold surface. It contains an alternating temperature control unit as well as a specific arrangement of mold inserts and elements.

In variotherm mold temperature control the mold surface is heated to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Only once the mold cavity has been filled is the mold cooling run until the part reaches its ejection temperature. To do this the cooling channels are alternately fed with warm and cold medium. The switch in medium temperature is performed by an alternating temperature controller. In ATT the cooling channels are not let into the steel by turning, drilling or milling, but rather formed by laser cusing, a constructive manufacturing technique where they are built up from steel powder. The cooling channels can thus follow the surface contours and lie very closely to the mold walls to be cooled, which also limits the mass of the mold subjected to a change in temperature.

Within the partnership Single is responsible for the specification and provision of the STWS alternating temperature control unit whilst Sauer Product is responsible for the design and laser cusing manufacture of the special mold inserts.

The STWS temperature control unit from Single used for ATT holds a heat transfer medium in two separate circuits at different temperature levels. The set temperatures for the two circuits can be adjusted on the unit. The two circuits are always run with the same medium. Water is recommended for temperatures up to 200°C, whilst oil covers the rarely used temperature range up to 300°C. The unit has an external valve station to swap both circuits from bypass to mold mode.
