Air Prepares the Path
Econ GmbH, Weisskirchen/Traun, Germany, has expanded its product line through addition of a new air pelletizing system designed specifically for processing of wood- and natural fiber-containing compounds (e.g. wood plastic compounds, WPC). The objective of the development project was to use air as the cooling and transporting medium for the pellets to eliminate the expenses associated with drying from the very beginning, while simultaneously achieving the benefits of underwater pelletizing technology (thermally isolated die plate).
Because water is used as the cooling and transporting medium, processing of WPC on conventional underwater pelletizing systems, for instance, is associated with a considerable expense for drying. If the wood or natural fiber content exceeds 50% in particular, the usual methods often do not suffice to achieve satisfactory drying levels. The new air pelletizing system that has been running in production for over a year at a customer has demonstrated the capabilities of this concept: for instance, various combinations such as polypropylene (PP)/wood, polystyrene/wood, PP/paper fiber residue and PP/wood/calcium carbonate have been processed successfully. Depending on the formulation and type of filler, throughputs as high as 400 kg/h have been achieved. Both injection molding and extrusion grades can be processed.
The modular system concept (functional modules) behind this equipment permits combination with underwater pelletizing. Starting with the pelletizing unit, it is very easy to convert the equipment through addition of the necessary components (process water & drying systems, piping). The result is a very flexible system suitable for a wide range of applications. Depending on the product, throughput and formulation, either air or water is used as the conveying medium. Short changeover times enhance the flexibility and guarantee high system availability, making rapid turnaround of customer orders a reality.
