Adhesive system for direct glazing
Crash Test-Proven Adhesive
Dow Automotive Systems, Horgen, Switzerland, has introduced an adhesive system for direct glazing. The crash test-proven material with the designation Betaseal 1580 can be used for installing large and curved windscreens. It allows a safe drive-away time of thirty minutes – even for vehicles with double airbag.
The single-component polyurethane (PU) adhesive is non-conductive and has a high elasticity modulus. It can be processed cold and is suitable for temperatures between -5°C and 45°C. The adhesive can be applied by hand or with battery-powered or pneumatic applicators. The safe drive-away time is achieved while still meeting the demanded global safety standards such as FMVSS 212/208, as demonstrated in a crash test conducted by the testing institute TÜV-Süd.
The manufacturer developed the system using the AINS (Accelerated Isotropic Network Structure) technology. A chemical structure of uniformly cross-linked prepolymers is thereby formed which can absorb the kinetic energy at high speeds. Application of a separate primer is no longer necessary, as its function has now been integrated into the formulation. Direct application of the adhesive to the cut PU bed is possible on condition that this is performed directly after cutting back, that the substrate is correspondingly clean and that the windscreen is installed immediately.
