When the Blue Disappears
Adhesive 214-CTH-UR-SC from Dymax Europe GmbH, Wiesbaden, Germany, visibly cures on exposure to LED light. Developed mainly for bonding catheters, this adhesive offers good adhesion to a wide range of plastics, including polyamide 12 and polyether block amides (PEBA). In the uncured state, the adhesive is bright blue in color. This makes it easy to see and therefore control its application. As the adhesive cures, its color changes from blue to transparent, indicating that the adhesive is fully cured.
Besides assisting process control, this curing indicator also allows non-destructive inspection to check that the adhesive is cured. When excited by light at a wavelength of 365 nm, the adhesive fluoresces red, contrasting well on plastics that naturally fluoresce blue in color. This enables product authentication and is a valuable aid in visual inspection of the bonded areas.
