Turbo among Plasticizers

Elatur DPT Based on Pentanols for PVC Applications

Many plastic products would be inconceivable without plasticizers. In some applications, they account for up to 40 % by weight. Plastics have to be flexible, smooth and versatile in use – especially in the case of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Almost all plasticizers are esters by virtue of their polar structure. Esters of phthalic acid have a particularly advantageous price/performance ratio and are available in chain lengths of between 4 and 13 carbon atoms. They include DINP (C9), which Evonik Performance Materials GmbH, Essen, markets in Europe under the brand name Vestinol 9.

Progress in the Field of Fast Fusers

The chemical group had been working on developing this new generation of plasticizers for some time. It took the first step in this direction in 2013 when it introduced Elatur CH (diisononyl cyclohexanoate). New Elatur DPT (diisopentyl terephthalate) is the outcome of progress in the field of fast fusers. Produced from pentanols sourced from the C4-production-Verbund, the plasticizer improves interaction with PVC due to its polar character and thus accelerates processing. It also improves pumpability and flowability at low temperatures.

According to the manufacturer, the product components are non-critical with regard to emissions of volatile or semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs, SVOCs), and so no additional emission-reducing coating of the plasticized PVC product is required. This provides customer benefits in the form of energy savings and increased production volumes in existing plants.
