High-Speed Shafts

Rotary Seals for Electrical Drives from Trelleborg

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Germany GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany, is launching the two seals HiSpin PDR RT and HiSpin HS40 especially for electromobility applications. They were designed for high rotational speeds and are therefore intended to extend the range of electric vehicles. Due to high speeds, sensitive electronics and automatic gear oil, rotary seals in vehicles with electric motors face different requirements. Gasoline engines usually run at 2000 to 4000 rpm. Electric drives on the other hand are four to eight times faster, at 15,000 to 16,000 rpm. An e-axis combines the electric motor and gearbox. Between these two components, a seal must keep the gearbox lubricant away from the dry motor compartment.

Conventional seals in the e-axis of modern electric vehicles have a maximum circumferential velocity of 30 m/s. The theoretical optimum circumferential velocity of the e-axis would have a value of over 60 m/s in order to maximize its efficiency. The goal of e-mobility seals was to increase the acceptable relative velocities on the shaft to at least 40 m/s.

According to the manufacturer, this goal has been reached with the HiSpin HS40, and with the HiSpin PDR-RT, has even been increased to 60 m/s. The HiSpin PDR RT consists of two parts: a metal housing and a mechanically fitting polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seal element. The seal has a lip that contacts with the shaft. Besides functioning at velocities over 60 ms/s, it also withstands severe temperature fluctuations. It is pressure-resistant and chemically stable, and dry-running is possible thanks to its low friction values. HiSpin HS40 is equipped with a bidirectional hydrodynamic sealing lip and also has only a low frictional torque at high velocities.
