HB-Therm Provides a Lifetime Warranty on the Heating Register
Quality advantages plus investment security for customers - this is the formula according to which HB-Therm AG, St. Gallen, Switzerland, provides a lifetime guarantee on all Thermo-5 temperature control units. This heating technology has a years-long proven track record: of the approximately 70,000 heating registers that are in use, the annual failure rate is less than 0.3%. According to HB-Therm, these figures prove that the heater developed by the Swiss company itself, without direct contact with the heating medium, has an advantage over conventional heating methods.
By its own account, HB-Therm understands the pros and cons of heating elements with direct heating medium contact at first hand, since up to the Series 3 temperature control units (ten years ago), all the company’s units also operated according to this heating principle. Such heating elements generally have a very attractive efficiency, since all the electrical energy is emitted directly into the medium with no losses. However, their crucial disadvantage is their lifetime. Through direct contact with the heating medium the heating coils are sooner or later subject to limescale, stress cracking or corrosion.
There is a simple explanation for this: as soon as the boiling point of the water is reached on the heating element, bubbles form as a result of the change of state. Where the bubble is in contact with the heating element, it is locally overheated. This results in stress cracking. The medium then penetrates into the heating element via these cracks, which ultimately leads to a defect. Limescale additionally forms at these points, creating an insulation layer that has a negative effect on the heat transfer.
In the new systems from HB-Therm, the heating coils are no longer in direct contact with the heat transfer medium, so that no stress cracks can occur. The superimposed system pressure prevents the water changing state. This effectively avoids bubble formation. The forced flow in the heating registers transfers the electrical energy to the heat-transfer medium (and thereby into the mold), and with a semiconductor relay, ensures uniform load distribution to all heating stages. Three integrated bimetallic circuit breakers prevent overheating in an emergency. The insulated heating pack reliably prevents uncontrolled heat emissions. Corrosion is already prevented by the use of stainless steel components.
High energy efficiency is achieved by the interplay of all the components of the temperature control device. The tankless heat-transfer medium circuit, results in minimum circulation volumes, so that only as much heat-transfer agent as necessary is temperature controlled. In addition, according to the manufacturer, a sophisticated cooling concept with few ventilation slits in the housing minimizes heat losses. If, despite this, the heating register should still fail, HB-Therm offers a free replacement.
