Single-Use Is Not Always Bad
Petcycle Bottles with a Good Eco-Balance for Fruit Juice Packaging
The new life-cycle assessment on fruit-juice packaging shows that single-use drink packaging can be environmentally equivalent to reusable glass bottles. What is more, it is less harmful to the climate. This was the summary of the operator of the Petcycle recycling system for beverage bottles.
Fruit Juice and Milk Packaging
The present life-cycle assessment relates only to juices and milk. Scientifically, it is neither permissible nor useful to apply the results to mineral water and soft drinks. The packaging landscape is more complex and shows a completely different picture for mineral water and soft drinks.
Unlike standardized reusable glass bottles for fruit juices, there are now many different reusable glass bottles on the market for mineral water and soft drinks. In addition, a huge sorting effort is required for the return of individual reusable glass bottles to the filler.
Ecologically Sound despite Single Use
In contrast to the single-use PET bottles for juice considered in the life-cycle assessment, Petcycle bottles have a high proportion of recyclate of at least 55%, lower bottle weights and shorter transport distances due to the use of reusable boxes. According to the manufacturer, Petcycle bottles are thus more ecologically sound than the single-use bottles for fruit juice considered.
The present life-cycle assessment, according to the company, thus does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about Petcycle bottles. This is also confirmed by the Ifeu Institute, which performed the present life-cycle assessment.
In 2010, the same Ifeu Institute also ascertained the ecological equivalence of Petcycle bottles and reusable glass bottles for mineral water and soft drinks. In 2016, the German Environment Agency conducted model analyses according to the latest standards for life-cycle assessment. According to the manufacturer, the Petcycle bottle has improved its environmental performance by a further 20%.
