Repsol Restarts its PE Units in Tarragona
Repsol restarts its high density and low density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) units in Tarragona, Spain, previous to the cracker restart after the multiannual maintenance shutdown. The cracker start-up operations are being prolonged longer than expected due to technical reasons.
The restart of the Tarragona’s cracker is a particularly demanding technical challenge because of the significant changes made to equipment and facilities which are critical and of high technical complexity. The investment involved in the planned maintenance shutdown, which exceeded EUR 95 million, puts Repsol’s cracker in Tarragona in the top group of European crackers in efficiency and competitiveness.
This restart reinforces Repsol’s commitment both with their ethylene customers from the site, as well as with their polyols, glycols and polyolefins derivatives clients. In order to achieve this goal, Repsol is transferring ethylene from its Sines site, in Portugal, and has acquired several ethylene carriers in the international market.
