Renewable Raw Materials: Good Advice

Twenty experts from industry, associations and research institutes have formed the “Council for Industrial Material Use of Biomass“ in Hürth, Germany. The committee will inform politicians about the use of renewable raw materials in industrial production and advise them how material utilization can be made equivalent to energy utilization in all new regulations. New political frameworks should be developed to ensure efficient and sustainable use of agricultural resources.

According to recent analyses by the nova-Institut GmbH, a total of 76 million metric tons of agricultural and forestry raw materials are used as renewable raw materials in Germany, 56% as material and 44% as energy. The most important material applications are pulp and paper, packaging materials, construction and insulating materials and furniture, textiles, surfactants, dyes, lubricants, plastics, tires and, especially, industrial biotechnology.
