PlasticsEurope: Record Production

The Association of Plastics Producers in Germany, PlasticsEurope Deutschland e.V., announced at a press conference that plastics producers have enjoyed a good start to 2006. Thus continues a development that showered plastics producers with record production figures and substantially higher sales in 2005. With production running at 18 m t (+2.9 %), more plastics were produced in 2005 than ever before, and sales reached EUR 21 bn (+5.3 %). According to Dr. Günter Hilken, chairman of PlasticsEurope Deutschland, exports remain the sector’s most important engine. The balance of exports last year was up 5.1 % in terms of volume and 15.6 % in value. The ratio of exports to production in 2005 was 67.6 %. Nearly three quarters of all exports went to EU countries, with 11.8 % (1.4 m t) going to Asia. Foreign sales generated EUR 12.5 bn (+6.5 %). Domestic sales generated EUR 8.5 bn, equivalent to an increase of 3.5 %.

The most important segments (automotive, electrical and electronic, machine making) all expanded in 2005; the only exception was the construction industry, which contracted -5.3 %.
